The
entity commonly known as "the Church" has a very interesting
past, first being a part of First Century Judaism to later
breaking away as an independent entity. Church history stems
from the establishment of Catholicism
and continues to the Protestant Reformation. Many today are seeking interest in
the lost Hebraic Roots of their faith. Truly, in order for one to understand
the Bible and the many Scriptural interpretations that exist, one
must contemplate the history of the organized Church.
Church history
can be a very debated subject, whether you
are Roman Catholic, Protestant, Messianic, or otherwise.
Throughout the centuries, the Holy Scriptures have been used for both
extortion and for bringing the good news of the Messiah to
the world. When examining the history of Christianity, we must be
objective and remember that "The one who does good is of God;
the one who does evil has not seen God" (3 John 11)
as there have
truly been a mix of people that have claimed Yeshua (Jesus) as their
Savior, some with honorable intentions and others for personal
gain.
What
has been the Church's position throughout history? How did things
change from the faith of the Apostles and early Believers to what predominantly
now exists? Are certain religious phenomenon in our days signaling
that we are coming "full circle" back to the faith of
the first followers of the Messiah? How should we as Messianic
Believers approach the history of Christianity, respecting those
who have come before us—yet recognizing error when we see it?
